SUMMARY: James Oschman - Intuition in Therapeutic Interactions
DESCRIPTION:Jim Oschman is the award-winning author of Energy Medicine: the scientific basis\, and Energy Medicine in Therapeutics and Human Performance. He lectures widely on the science behind a variety of emerging medical techniques. For example\, Jim has lectured and presented workshops at various Osteopathic schools around the world\, as well as at the Sutherland Cranial College in London. Jim has degrees in Biophysics and Biology from the University of Pittsburgh. He has worked in major research labs around the world. He has published more than 100 articles and books\, and his scientific papers have been published in the world's leading journals. Jim has both taught and attended classes at various therapeutic schools around the world\, and experienced a wide range of bodywork techniques. Finally\, Jim has become involved in the development of cutting-edge medical devices and other applications of the emerging concepts of energy medicine. Jim is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board for the National Foundation for Alternative Medicine\, and is the recipient of the Foundation's Founders Award. He has also received a Distinguished Service Award from the Rolf Institute and a Career Award from the International Fascia Research Congress. He is also a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine. Modern study of energy and energy medicine has opened up new insights into long-standing puzzles about life and health. For example\, intuition has long been a mysterious process even though it plays a key role in medicine. This is one of the reasons we refer to medicine as an “art.” Some of us are born with a keen intuitive sense that sometimes surprises or even frightens us. Others gradually develop their intuitive skills during or after their training. Precisely what is intuition? To understand this subject we must delve into the nature of the conscious and unconscious minds. These are some of the most puzzling and challenging subjects in science. However\, prominent scholars are beginning to reach a remarkable consensus about the nature of consciousness. These leading thinkers include neuroscientists\, quantum physicists\, biophysicists\, cosmologists and psychologists. The model that is emerging goes far beyond the brain and nervous system. It is a model that expands the possibilities for any therapeutic approach\, and helps us understand extraordinary phenomena taking place in therapeutics and human performance that are far faster and more intricate than can be explained by slow moving nerve impulses. A remarkable conclusion: astonishingly sensitive quantum phenomena are upstream from all healthy structure and function. Jim Oschman has a passion for fitting together the pieces of this remarkable puzzle\, their significance for therapeutics\, and sharing the ideas with the osteopathic community.

SUMMARY:Sue Turner - An Introduction to the Osteopathic Treatment Principle of Balanced Ligamentous Tension
DESCRIPTION:WG Sutherland is well-known for his pioneering work with Osteopathy in the Cranial Field\, but less known for the precise treatment approach to the rest of the body that he learned from Andrew Taylor Still during his osteopathic training between 1898 and 1900. In the application of Balanced Ligamentous Tension we find a bridge that spans the false divide between 'structural' and 'cranial' osteopathy\, that is both safe and precise\, and a vital part of our osteopathic heritage. Sue Turner graduated from the European School of Osteopathy in Maidstone\, UK in 1979 and has been in osteopathic practice in London since then. She taught at the ESO from 1979-2000\, establishing the school’s undergraduate children’s clinic and cranial and paediatric osteopathy courses. Since 1997 she has taught on the ESO’s osteopathic training programme in Russia. She was a member of the founding team of the Osteopathic Centre for Children\, London\, where she worked for its first 4 years. Since 1986 she has taught cranial osteopathy at post-graduate level\, first with the British School of Osteopathy and then\, since 1994\, with the Sutherland Cranial College of Osteopathy. Through the inspiration of W. G. Sutherland’s student\, Dr. Anne Wales\, DO through the 1990’s she set up annual courses in ‘Balanced Ligamentous Tension’ in England and Germany and has also taught this approach in Australia\, Russia\, Italy\, Spain and Sweden. She has contributed to the textbook ‘Paediatric Osteopathy’ ed Moeckel and Mitha 2005.

SUMMARY:Robin Kirk - Science, philosophy and the politics of osteopathy.
DESCRIPTION:The talk will be a personal perspective about what it is that brought osteopathy to the position that it is in today. Questions being posed such as: What is the role of science in osteopathy? Science has been used as a weapon against osteopathy in the past\, how can this be changed? Is EBM fit for osteopathic purpose? Should osteopathy take an interest in preventative health\, health promotion and multifactorial healthcare or is it content to take up some superior sort of manual therapy niche in the healthcare market? Robin Kirk DO has been in practice for over 40 years\, treats patients on the NHS and has been Principal of the London School of Osteopathy for 12 years.

SUMMARY:Dr. Colin Stolkin - An introduction to the study of Language and the Brain
DESCRIPTION:*** change of date *** The study of language and the brain is a vast and complex subject. It is also along with the study of human origins fundamental to our understanding of what it means to be human. The scientific evidence in both these areas is basically grounded in anatomical study. The aim of this lecture is to make a complex but important subject accessible. It is not the aim of this lecture to refer to for example the latest genetic studies\, but to clarify the key studies and ideas in an area which always excites and confuses and hence inevitably frustrates students. Evolutionary studies of the cortices of mammals demonstrate an increasing proportion of areas that are not primary sensory or motor areas. This increase is most pronounced in the primates and man. The primary areas demonstrate relatively simple maps with localisation of function. These simpler maps are bilaterally represented on both cortices. Beyond these areas are maps with increasingly complex areas of activity. More complex functions are more unilaterally located – and the question of lateralisation of functions will be discussed in this lecture. There is a body of evidence of basic knowledge about the role of the brain in language\, cognitive functions and learning. This lecture will concentrate on the studies of language – an ideal entry point to all of these studies. Early studies and more modern studies will be presented and the Wernicke – Geschwind model of language developed. Noam Chomsky’s neurologic grammar\, sign language and the possible relationship between language and movement will be discussed. This lecture will then form a starting point for anyone wishing to read more widely and more deeply into the subject. Colin Stolkin is a Londoner and has worked and taught in Medical Schools for most of his life. He studied both medicine\, and physiology and experimental psychology at Oxford. After house jobs in medicine and neuro-surgery he then returned to London to live and work. He was MRC Junior Research Fellow at the Institute of Psychiatry\, Mental Health Foundation Senior Research Fellow at University College\, European Molecular Biology Organisation Travelling Fellow at John’s Hopkins Baltimore\, and then Wellcome Foundation Research Fellow at King's College London\, where he has worked ever since. His experimental research was on learning in animals and the growth of neurones during development and in relation to changes in nerve signals. His current interests are in medical education and the ways of teaching sciences to medical students; the public communication of basic scientific ideas to young people\, & the Arts - Science interface. He has been highly successful in many design innovations in medical education. His Foundation Course was a unique conversion course enabling Arts/Humanities graduates and VIth formers to study medicine and dentistry. He has lectured at the Body World’s exhibition on the history of anatomy and the problems of body donation and has visited Dallian with Gunther von Hagens\, the UK body donors and journalists to see the process of plastination\, and lectured on Anatomy to von Hagens’ dissectors. Colin is a former Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences of King's College London and also former Director of the Neuroscience Degree Programme at KCL. He is also a former Senior Lecturer in Anatomy in the Department of Anatomy\, and Human Sciences at King’s College where he still teaches undergraduate students. He also lectures to graduate students externally at the Royal College of Surgeons and the London School of Osteopathy. He is the Society of Apothecaries Lecturer in the History of Medicine at King’s College School of Medicine.

SUMMARY:Paddy Searle-Barnes - Osteopathic treatment - How can we help? What can we help? A personal view
DESCRIPTION:Paddy Searle-Barnes qualified from the BSO in 1983\, and returned to teach in 1988\, initially in the clinic\, but moved to academic teaching in 1991 teaching osteopathic diagnosis and evaluation with Emmanuel Sammut\, with whom he co-authored a textbook on osteopathic diagnosis\, published in 1998. He also taught about the clinical management of patients with endocrine problems (from 1994)\, respiratory problems (from 2\,003) and cardiovascular problems (from 2004)\, until ceasing teaching in 2009. He has been in private practice in Lincoln since 1983\, and since 1996 has also practised privately in a local medical centre. This led to involvement in an NHS contract since 2006\, though this only covers patients with mechanical low back pain. He currently has a special interest in the management of patients with chronic pain\, particularly those who have psychological\, emotional and social factors contributing to their disability. This interest has been influenced considerably by research from the NOI group and the ‘Mindfields College’ (Human Givens - psychotherapy approach). Related to this he has a particular interest in patients with breathing pattern disorders such as hyperventilation. This talk will briefly discuss the current biopsycho-social model of pain\, in order to explore how we as osteopaths impact on patients. Manual therapy can be much more effective if we engage with the person\, their mind and emotions as we handle their physical body. This presentation will focus on the practical implications of these ideas in clinical practice. For instance\, at times the effect of what we say may markedly influence the impact of techniques we use. Equally\, finding the right questions to ask of the patient\, particularly in relation to social context\, may provide the key to why the patient holds themself the way that they do. These issues are applied equally to non mechanical symptoms in other body systems\, and may help us decide how and where we may help patients with such symptoms. This is particularly relevant to patients with ‘functional disorders’ such as asthma\, IBS\, and headaches.

Having read how the technique Somatic Experiencing (SE) was used to help the tsunami survivors in Thailand and India\, he began his training in it (for more information regarding SE\, go to www.traumahealing.com.) He is now an internationally qualified somatic experiencing practitioner and uses SE in conjunction with osteopathy in his practices in Bath and London’s Harley Street. Bravis will be updating ANS ideas which are very pertinent to osteopaths\, theory on the nature and purpose of emotions\, and basic traumatology theory. This will be an interactive discussion\, so please come prepared. Best sources are his book 'Touch and Emotion in Manual Therapy' and his website www.bevisnathanassociates.com.

SUMMARY:Alison Harvey - Visceral Manipulation - An introduction to the work of Jean-Pierre Barral
DESCRIPTION:Alison Harvey is a chiropractor working with Applied Kinesiology\, CranioSacral Therapy and Visceral Manipulation. She lives and works in Ayr\, south west Scotland where she opened her own multidisciplinary clinic in 2002. Alison runs the UK branch of the Barral Institute for training in Visceral Manipulation. She has written a book "A Pathway to Health; How Visceral Manipulation can help you" based on the work of Jean-Pierre Barral. Alison instructs the first two levels of the Visceral Manipulation Curriculum of the Barral Institute and is the only native English speaking instructor in Europe. She teaches classes in the UK and internationally and enjoys increasing awareness of this highly effective therapy. Alison will introduce Visceral Manipulation as taught by Jean-Pierre Barral and his organisation\, the Barral Institute. Visceral Manipulation (VM) was developed by French Osteopath\, Jean-Pierre Barral. He was named one of Time Magazine's Top Six Innovators for Alternative Medicine to watch in the new millennium. This delicate manual therapy is often cited as a missing link in the treatment of recurring musculoskeletal pain\, postural distortions and biomechanical dysfunction. Having introduced some key concepts there will also be a treatment demonstration and an introduction to feeling the body's viscera.

SUMMARY:Sue Turner - Balanced Ligamentous Tension
DESCRIPTION:Balanced Ligamnetous Tension is an approach that engages the innate therapeutic powers in the living body to reveal a bridge between the so-called 'structural' and so-called 'cranial' approaches within the breadth of osteopathy. It is an approach learned by W. G. Sutherland DO under the hands of AT Still and was taught to Sue Turner and her colleagues by Dr. Sutherland's student\, Anne Wales DO. Sue has practiced osteopathy in London since she graduated from the ESO in 1979. She has taught osteopathic medicine\, paediatric osteopathy and osteopathy in the cranial field at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the UK and overseas. In 1989 she co-founded the ESO undergraduate children’s clinic\, and directed it form 1991-2000. She was also part of the founding team of the Osteopathic Centre for Children in London where she worked from 1991-1999. Since 1995\, following intensive tuition from Anne Wales DO\, Sue has set up postgraduate courses in Dr.Sutherland’s Approach to the Body\, applying the principle of Balanced Ligamentous Tension. She teaches internationally\, and since 1997 she has coordinated the cranial component of the ESO’s Russian osteopathic training programme.

SUMMARY:Jonathan Grice - Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT)
DESCRIPTION:Jonathan came to Osteopathy after a career in business analysis and through a serious back injury playing rugby league. Jonathan graduated from BCOM in 2011. In the same year\, he started to become interested in biophotomodulation or low level laser therapy (LLLT) due to research he uncovered doing the literature review for his dissertation. In following the research he contacted THOR Photomedicine\, and they contracted him to provide clinical advice to low level laser therapists\, develop the evidence base for LLLT and write protocols for the use of LLLT. He provides seminars on LLLT to osteopaths\, chiropractors\, physiotherapists and medical practitioners. Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) LLLT improves tissue repair\, reduces pain and inflammation wherever the beam is applied. Usually applied by a doctor\, therapist or technician\, treatments take about 10 minutes and should be applied two or more times a week. LLLT has been used for many years on sports injuries\, arthritic joints\, neuropathic pain syndromes\, back and neck pain. Over 200 randomised clinical trials have been published on LLLT\, half of which are on pain. Customers include British and US military\, Premier Division soccer teams\, Olympic teams\, Formula 1\, rugby and cricket team therapists as well as specialist pain clinics in the UK and USA.

SUMMARY:Jonathan Edis - "Why I don't do "Cranial" Osteopathy (but it looks like it sometimes)
DESCRIPTION:Jonathan Edis qualified from the BSO in 2001. He has worked in private practice and has taught at the BSO since 2002. For a few years\, he used a broad range of osteopathic techniques\, including osteopathy in the cranial field (OCF) but lapsed from it after attending the Still Technique workshop at the DOK symposium in 2004. Since then he has become interested in the work of Walter McKone and the philosophy behind osteopathy. As a result\, he has reservations about the OCF model and has begun to consider other explanations for its clinical effects. Through Walter\, he has also been introduced to the forgotten work of Charlotte Weaver who produced a cranial model before William Garner Sutherland. This lecture will present Jonathan’s practical\, theoretical and philosophical issues with OCF\, and introduce some alternatives\, including Weaver’s idea of the Cranial Vertebrae.

SUMMARY:Dave Hompes - How Bugs & Bread Hurt Bones
DESCRIPTION:Would you like to know how a common stomach infection that is present in approximately 40% of the UK population may indirectly cause osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthritis? Some of you already have this bug! Could you benefit from knowing how the two main foods most of you are eating on a daily basis can not only accelerate bone loss\, but also fan the fires of muscle and joint pain? Would it be beneficial to you and your patients to know how profoundly important digestive health is in keeping nerves\, muscles and bones healthy? Can you imagine how many referrals you could attract if you were the only osteopath in town who taught your patients how to deal with these common problems (and\, in the process\, add up to TEN extra income streams to your practice?) Meet Dave Hompes…. But be aware that right now\, he is a little agitated\, which makes for an entertaining evening! He’s upset that the UK medical system is doing such an average job of helping UK patients deal with common\, entirely preventable and curable symptoms by ignoring scientific evidence. He’s even more upset that some of the medical advice and treatments given to patients may give rise to potentially serious\, debilitating diseases of the muscles\, bones and joints. Dave is here to teach you how\, as osteopaths\, you can not only treat these disorders using physical manipulation\, but also prevent them in the first place by simply understanding that “neuro-musculo-skeletal” health is largely determined by the health of your gut. Dave uses evidence-based Nutr ition Coaching and Functional Medicine techniques to help his readers\, customers and clients achieve the health improvements they deserve. He has also created a unique education and business system that teaches health care practitioners - including osteopaths - how to use these techniques to achieve optimal results with patients. These are the very same techniques Dave has used to sell more than 10\,000 books and build a £200k per year business. If you can handle that\, well\, we’d simply love to see you there! All attendees will be entered into a prize draw to win copies of all Dave’s books\, e-books and DVDs\, valued at more than £100!

SUMMARY:Andy Cotton - The Osteopathic Lesion
DESCRIPTION:Pleased to announce a special talk to mark the 10 year anniversary of Manus Sinistra. In the modern era\, one might be forgiven for wondering what claim osteopathy has as being a separate therapeutic practice\, with an identifiable body of knowledge\, philosophy\, strategy and practice. Understanding the sad demise of the Osteopathic Lesion\, and reclaiming it's value in evaluation and treatment\, goes a long way towards finding the baby in the last few drops of bathwater. Elegant in it's conception\, clear in it's nature\, and revelatory in it's importance in the body's economy\, a deep understanding of the Osteopathic Lesion is arguably central to the practice of Osteopathy.

SUMMARY:John O'Brien - Thinking Beyond The Box- an open mind to debate Osteopathic notions and critically question their validity
DESCRIPTION:Osteopathic advancement has been attained through its colleges\, we must ensure that schools continue to adapt to health\, social\, and environmental change. Those schools that fail to anticipate this will be doing their students much disfavour. It was asked to two managing directors of car manufacturing companies what was their firm's ethos. Rover group MD replied\, "my workers work well in teams\, that is our message". The BMW MD said\, "To produce the best cars in the world". If graduate osteopaths are to be the best spinal specialists then we have to address spinal complexities\, thinking beyond the box of musculo-skeletal medicine. Biography John O' Brien qualified from the BSO in 1966 and has practiced osteopathy for 40 years in Oxford. John taught minor surgery and clinical studies at the BSO as well as lecturing in the History of Osteopathy. John has experience as a Final Clinical Competence Examiner/Moderator for 20 years in the UK as well as Belgium and the Nederlands. In 2007 he completed an MA in the History of Medicine and co-founded the National Osteopathic Archive with Dr Martin collins. He is currently finishing his book on the History of UK Osteopathy\, a narrative and analysis of the highlights of its evolution.

SUMMARY:Feng Shui and the Art of Pillow Placement
DESCRIPTION:This event was an Aprils fools joke!Arranging pillows on a plinth is a fairly mundane activity that in itself does not necessarily require instruction. However if you wish to optimise patient comfort and thus maximise the effectivity of patient care\, some simple pointers will be helpful give your pillowed patient maximum comfort. MORE IS MORE\, MORE OR LESS Regardless of how passionate you are for pillows\, the old adage that less is more does not apply when it comes to staging your treatment room. If it flexes it needs a pillow. “…What immortal hand or eye\, could frame thy fearful symmetry?” -William Blake: Of course\, Blake was talking about a tiger\, probably\, when he wrote this poem but it applies to pillow placement too. Do not be afraid of over doing symmetrical patterning when it comes to pillow placement. SIZE MATTERS AND VARIETY IS A GOOD THING Avoid using just small pillows on a large patient and vice versa. Proportionality is important and using different sizes\, shapes\, colors and textures helps to match the patients shape\, tone and level of hydration. BOLD AND BRIGHT When you want to give a little more of an esoteric feel to your treatment use bright mystical colours and bold patterns. Floral patterns are usually a traditional standard but there are many modern floral prints available today that can give an esoteric flare to your treatment room.Research has demonstrated enhanced clinical outcomes when you step up to the art of pillow placement. BIOGRAPHY Las Ani is a feng shiu master and has taught feng shui at the university of British Columbia for over 10 years. She holds a Masters Degree in Business Communications and a Bachelors in Theory of Arts. Feng shui is ancient Chinese system of aesthetics.

SUMMARY:David Tiberio - Applied Functional Science: Finding your patient's THRESHOLD of SUCCESS
DESCRIPTION:Rehabilitation and training utilizing the Applied Functional Science principles requires that the client's "threshold if success" be determined. The threshold of success is specific to the activity that the client wishes to perform. Once this "threshold" is established\, then movement exercises are tweaked in order to expand this three-dimensional threshold of capability. In choosing what movement variables to alter (tweak) the practitioner establishes a logical program for progress. Biography David Tiberio PhD\, PT\, OCS is a former Associate Professor at the University of Connecticut. David teaches in the area of kinesiology\, therapeutic exercise and musculoskeletal dysfunction. His research interests include muscle activity during functional exercise and the relationship between foot and leg function. David has published articles in Physical Therapy\, Foot and Ankle\, Clinical Biomechanics and JOSPT. He is the editor for the Function Junction website. David has taught numerous courses with Gary Gray over the past 24 years. Dave is a faculty member and the Academic Dean of the Gray Institute for Functional Transformation (GIFT).

SUMMARY:Massih Yaghmaie - Principals of Daoism/Taoism
DESCRIPTION:Acupuncturist and osteopath Massih Yaghmaie presents a talk on the application of Daoist/Taoist principals to science\, medicine\, food\, health\, wealth and happiness. Biography Massih Yaghmaie's initial studies were at London University where he obtained a Bachelor of Science (BSc Honours) degree in Biology/Biochemistry\, specialising in molecular biology. He then went on to study for a Doctorate (PhD) which explored the relationship between cancer and the structure of red blood cells. Whilst at university\, he suffered a serious knee injury during a Martial Arts competition\, and was recommended to Osteopathy and Naturopathic medicine as a means of restoring the knee to full health. He was so impressed with the potency of the therapies that he decided on a change of career. He promptly withdrew from his PhD course and embarked on fourteen full years of studying alternative and complementary medicine. He first completed a six-year diploma course in Osteopathy and Naturopathy\, then went on to take a four year full time Bachelor degree course in Acupuncture followed by further studies of Chinese Herbs. For the last twenty years he has also studied Martial Arts\, Qi-Kung and Tai Qi Chuan\, and has spent seven years as a pupil of Daoist Master Tsu Chang. Massih has worked extensively in alternative medicine since 1984 and has held senior lecturing posts at various colleges. As well as running a private practice\, he retains a permanent post at a leading clinic and practices and teaches Tai Qi Chuan and Qi Kung. He comes from a long line of medical practitioners\, which include his mother and grandmother who both practised ancient Persian medicine (TIBB).

SUMMARY:Course: Gio Maschio - Chi kung for osteopaths
DESCRIPTION: This workshop is intended as a follow up to Bruce Frantzis' Manus Sinistra talk in October 2010. Chi Kung is a system of practices which develop the ability of a person to feel inside their own body at levels ranging from the gross to the exceedingly subtle. This enables practitioners to relax and let go of tension which is closing down the body so that it naturally re-opens into a healthy state. With practice it is also possible to use the same techniques for therapeutic effect on another person as a form of manual therapy which Bruce demonstrated in October. Chi Kung can be used by osteopaths to augment their existing skills by improving palpation ability and stability and also to improve their own health. Online booking below. Limited to 24 places. Attendees will learn: - Techniques to augment internal stability\, smoothness and relaxation. - Techniques to improve the internal awareness of the physical body and nervous system. - How to use the above for ones own benefit and to improve palpation skills and release tensions in patients helping them to re-open into a healthy state All techniques taught will be simple and direct without the need to learn any "moves" or "forms". Biography Gio teaches qi gong at the College of Integrated Chinese Medicine and has been teaching Taoist energy arts for over ten years\, and practising them for nearly 20. He is one of Master BK Frantzis' most experienced instructors in Europe\, trained and certified by him to teach t'ai chi\, qi gong\, nei gong and taoist breathing techniques. He is director of Oxford Internal Arts\, teaching and practising full-time in Oxford\, has conducted seminars for the BAcC\, has a masters degree in philosophy\, and also studies buddhism\, dzogchen\, and the Taoist traditions of meditation. Following the death of the founder of the BSO\, J.M.Littlejohn\, in 1947\, instruction based on his extensive clinical experience and treatment protocols\, documented by him and colleagues such as Still\, McConnell\, Clark and Burns at Kirksville and at the Chicago Osteopathic Hospital as well as in the UK\, were abandoned\, ignored and replaced by instruction solely in minor orthopedics. All but a few of his students refused to give up the practice of Osteopathic Medicine at the bedside of the truly sick and kept this unique contribution to modern medicine alive. This lecture will include films of such treatment as well as attempt to present a case\, including its evidence base\, for a radical revision of the syllabus and direction of current schools of instruction in Osteopathy. Furthermore\, that it is irresponsible that current Osteopathic graduates are not versed and proficient in the art and science of treatment at the acute bedside. In an era of increasing concern regarding the development of microbial strains resistant to antibiotics\, as well as the high rates of morbidity due to viral infectious disease\, is it negligent and possibly unethical to withhold such studies and skills from students\, both under and postgraduates? Biography Mervyn Waldman is a 1974 graduate of the BCOM and taught Principles & Practice of Classical Osteopathy at the ESO from 1976-1990. In addition to being an osteopath\, Mervyn became a graduate teacher of the Alexander Technique in 1981. Since 1991 he has practiced as an osteopath for some 20 years at the hospital bedside\, for a decade in Hadassah University Hospital\, Jerusalem\, and currently at Rambam University Hospital's Institute of Pain Medicine\, In Haifa. Mervyn is also the president of The Institute of Classical Osteopathy\, UK. SUMMARY:Rupert Sheldrake - Morphic Resonance and Morphic Fields
DESCRIPTION:Rupert Sheldrake proposes that nature is not governed by fixed laws but by evolving habits. All self-organizing systems\, including crystals\, plants\, and animal and human bodies and minds are shaped by morphic fields containing an inherent memory\, given by a process called morphic resonance from previous similar systems. All human beings draw upon a collective human memory\, and in turn contribute to it. Even individual memory depends on morphic resonance rather than on physical memory traces stored within the brain. This hypothesis is testable experimentally\, and has many implications\, some of which Rupert will explore in this lecture. Biography Rupert Sheldrake\, Ph.D. studied natural sciences at Cambridge and philosophy at Harvard. He took his Ph.D in biochemistry from Cambridge in 1967. Sheldrake is the author of more than 80 scientific papers and several books\, including A New Science of Life\, The Rebirth of Nature and Seven Experiments That Could Change the World. He was a Fellow of Clare College\, Cambridge and a Research Fellow of the Royal Society. He is currently a Fellow of the Institute of Noetic Sciences in California and a visiting Professor at the Graduate Institute in Connecticut.

SUMMARY:Glynn Booker & Jonathan Edis - An Introduction to the Still technique
DESCRIPTION:The Still Technique was devised by an american\, Richard van Buskirk. His intention was to reinvent techniques that were believed to be used by AT Still\, based on various descriptions to be found in his writings and those of his students\, as well as some early film footage. In essence\, the technique is a dynamic hybrid of structural and functional approaches but is yet quite distinct from either. It provides a framework for achieving a similar release to HVT work\, but is applicable in many situations where HVT is not. The technique is often successful where HVT has not succeeded\, and is usually more comfortable to the patient. Biography Glynn Booker worked variously in Health & Safety and Office Management\, with a strong background in sports\, climbing and martial arts before qualifying from the British School of Osteopathy in 2004. He has a wealth of experience in workplace ergonomics particularly\, but also in sports injuries\, osteopathic work with children\, mums-to-be and the elderly. Glynn's approach is a pragmatic one\, with the emphasis on gentle treatment and forceful only where necessary. He uses a variety of techniques across the spectrum of osteopathy: structural\, functional and cranio-sacral. In addition\, he trained in Van Buskirk's "Still Technique" in Bavaria as a student in 2004 and uses these techniques extensively. Since 2007\, Glynn has also been teaching osteopathy as a Clinic Tutor at the British School of Osteopathy. Jonathan Edis is an osteopath and lecturer at the British School of Osteopathy (BSO). He also runs postgraduate courses on the Still Technique - a form of osteopathic manipulative technique (OMT) based on the original techniques of AT Still that is little known outside of North America. His other area of interest is the history and philosophy of science and its role in the development of current osteopathic practice.

SUMMARY:Course: Sue Turner & colleagues – Balanced Ligamentous Technique
DESCRIPTION:On this one-day workshop we will explore the treatment principle of Balanced Ligamentous Tension\, which W. G. Sutherland D.O. learned under the hands of A.T. Still and was taught to this faculty group by Dr. Sutherland's student\, Anne Wales D.O. This approach to engaging the innate therapeutic powers in the living body reveals a bridge between the so-called 'structural' and so-called 'cranial' approaches within the breadth of osteopathy. We will also consider ways of accessing physiology through simple osteopathic manoeuvres\, which are as relevant to the health needs of 21st century people as they were in the early days of the osteopathic pioneers. A high tutor-to-tutor student ratio will offer a special opportunity to work with this principle in small groups with individual support. This course is intended for 3rd and 4th year BSO students and priority will be given to their bookings. Limited to 40 places. Biography This course is led by Susan Turner. SUMMARY:Bruce Frantzis - Health is more than absence of disease
DESCRIPTION:Bruce Frantzis has a unique insight into the experience of pain and its treatment possessing both extensive experience as a manual therapist and having suffered and recovered from serious spinal injury. Bruce holds a PhD in health sciences and as a manual therapist in China\, Bruce treated over 10\,000 patients including those with nerve and organ damage and cancer. In 1982 he suffered massive spinal injury in a road traffic accident\, fracturing several vertebrae and rupturing many of his spinal ligaments and tendons. However\, in the years that followed\, Bruce was able to recover from this spinal injury and overcome the associated physical\, mental and emotional pain\, using techniques derived from the same principles underlying his manual therapy experience. Traditional Chinese manual therapy starts from the same premise as osteopathy: The body possesses the inherent capacity to defend\, repair and remodel itself; and\, structure and function are reciprocally interrelated. In addition to the physical body\, Chinese manual therapy also works with subtle energy\, or chi (referred to by cranial osteopaths as the "potency" which drives the involuntary mechanism)\, seeking to make its movement free and balanced. In this talk\, Bruce will explore four potential topics: Pain: including methods for treating patients in pain\, and exercises for physical therapy. Palpation: the art of feeling the insides of the human body and recognising what needs attention\, both within an osteopathic context and beyond. The capacities of the human body: is it just muscles pulling on bones\, or are we able to actively control and move a whole lot more? Practitioner burnout: including techniques for dealing with physical and emotional stresses incurred through treating seriously ill patients and developing healthy rather than unhealthy rhythms in your system. "Drawing on over a decade of training in China\, Bruce Frantzis is able to teach qigong in a way that makes sense to the Western mind and is easy to understand\, giving precise details on body alignments\, energy mechanics and breathing. He has trained many instructors who are now authorized to teach throughout the United States and Europe\, making this health-promoting practice available to a wide audience." —Kenneth Lossing D.O.\, Private Practice in San Rafael\, California; Director of the Visceral Manipulation Program and Member of the Board of Governors of the American Academy of Osteopathy; Board Certified in Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine\, and Family Practice and Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine. Biography Bruce Frantzis PhD is a Taoist Lineage Master with over 40 years of experience in Eastern healing systems. He has trained for over a decade in China and also has extensive experience in Zen\, Tibetan Buddhism \, yoga\, Kundalini\, energy healing therapies and Taoist Fire and Water traditions. He is the first known Westerner to hold authentic lineages in qigong\, bagua\, tai chi\, hsing-i and Taoist meditation. He has taught these Taoist energy arts to more than 20\,000 students. Dr. Frantzis trained for over a decade in China and also has extensive experience in Zen\, Tibetan Buddhism\, yoga\, Kundalini\, energy healing therapies and Taoist Fire and Water traditions.
